Sewing First Skirt – How it all began

First Skirt that I sew

The next three days are holidays because of the long weekend. There is work to be done, but the idea of a vacation for the next three days made the day so comfortable. Even after wrapping up on time in the morning, the meal was finished at 2 o’clock. There was some work to do but we both decided to watch the movie after a long time and we did watch until 4.00 pm. By then Saanvi was asleep and she started grumbling a bit afterward. Meanwhile, Prashant had taken to organizing the photos on the hard drive. He immediately started showing Saanvi’s childhood videos and then her mood was a bit ok by then. After a while, she ran to Aaji (grandmother) and started playing with her.

However, we kept looking at the other photos, and all of a sudden we came to the folder of Sparkle Kavi and first saw the above photo. And everything flashbacked like a movie.

To pass my time when we were in America we bought a sewing machine. And we both decided that I would sew all my dresses from now on, and I would not buy any new dress (I took it anyway šŸ˜‰). But Prashant’s Insistence was not to buy any new readymade dress but can give you any amount of fabric and material to sew it on own. (And he kept his word). This was the beginning of my sewing first skirt.

Until then, In the USA we did not even know where to buy the fabric and from that point, we started to know everything. This is the skirt that I sew of the same fabric that we brought. I remember the average price of this fabric was $5. As soon as the calculation started in my head, a garment that costs around Rs. 80 in India is available here for Rs 350. And if this gets wasted then I will not like it all. But on the other hand Prashant had different views. He said, if you don’t try then, the cloth will be wasted. That’s when I started thinking positively.

But I also wanted to make a good skirt in the first attempt. So I made a paper skirt first, sewed it by hand, and tried it on me carefully. Then only I dared to scissor the cloth and started sewing my first skirt. I had no experience in sewing. I made this first skirt with little online help. For some reason, I wanted to call my mother and tell her this story. After that I sewed a lot for myself, tops, western dress and much more. Even after that, I did not stop buying new dresses from the shops 😁😁 …. but it became less šŸ™‚

Such is the beginning of Sparkle Kavi and I šŸ™‚ 22 August 2015

To-Do during COVID-19 Lock down

Things to do in lock down

Learn different techniques in Photography to get beautiful pictures.

I will be to the point on this topic as there are many topics already on a different platform in regards To-Do during COVID-19 Lock down.

These are a few things that I always experiment when I have away from orders which are best suit as a To-Do during COVID-19 Lock down as there nothing to do:

  1. Learn photo editing tools like Photoshop, Illustrator, GIMP, Lightroom, Corel Draw
  2. Get to know your Camera by trying different settings
  3. Build DIY Photography Light Box
  4. Research good tripod if you do not have
  5. Research suitable backdrop suits your product
  6. Make Light reflector

Learn Taxes

Being in a creative domain we always try to delay learning tax terms applicable to our little small business. But I guess in the long run it is equally important to the product you are making. You should be investing this time in learning different tax terms applicable to your business. So that it would be eventually helpful to you to understand and explain to a tax consultant.

Learning such things will increase your confidence and you won’t fear it. Also, you will be more organized to gather tax-related information for tax sessions next year.

Few topics to learn that I am also learning:

  1. GST
  2. Tax return
  3. Professional Tax: PTRC and PTEC

Develop A Website

Yes. You read it right. You can make a website on your own in this lockdown, I have made it in 4 days with very little efforts and less price. You don’t need to be a web developer for this or need to have any software knowledge. You probably don’t even need to hire anyone, just google and YouTube is fine. You will need a domain name and domain space that’s it.

Currently, there are many options in the market to develop a website, for example, Magento, WooCommerce, Wix, and the list goes on. It’s depending upon you how much money and time you want to spend. I purposefully have not mentioned Shopify due to its way of business model.

I am going to suggest the Magento community edition or WooCommerce by WordPress for this purpose. As they both are open-source and free community versions, and you just need a domain name and hosting space.

Magento is more advance and requires little effort and technical knowledge but again with YouTube videos and google you can make it. But personally, I find it more advance and suits big retailers and organizations. So, for now, I have skipped this option although I have 10 years of experience in software development.

Our website SparkleKavi.Com is developed in WooCommerce for two reasons.

  • Basically platform is free
  • Less complicated and still solves my purpose

Your business should be everywhere but begin small business owners we do not get much time to have a business’s presence at every platform. Having a video channel you will have physical existence to your online shop and will increase confidence in your followers on a different platform.

A blog

As you might have guessed by now that I have started this blog in this lock down and this To-Do during COVID-19 Lock down is the first blog post. Unfortunately, manyĀ businessesĀ are yet to wake up to the benefits of this tool. Valid reasons range from lack of timeĀ for writingĀ theĀ blog posts to a lack of ideas for quality posts.

A blog is one of the most cost-effective & easy ways to promote your business. If you do it regularly with the right blog post subjects it will drive more traffic to your website, which will also help to increase your sales.

And off-course family time.
